Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze Wii U/Nintendo Switch, what a game, colorful as always, levels falling apart as you run along, moving from land and water, avoiding obstacles and taking out enemies, being forced to move forwards in some levels without being able to take a breather, unless of course you choose to pause the game. An old character returns and a known character is finally made playable. Even though Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is similar to Donkey Kong Country Returns, I still enjoyed it, new levels, new music, new enemies and artistic as ever in the background imagery.
It was nice to have Dixie Kong make a return, however, she overshadowed Cranky and Diddy, Dixie made it easier to reach high places. Cranky was capable of jumping on surfaces that normally would hurt you, such as spikes, which was rarely ever needed, the only time I used Cranky Kong was during the levels that I was forced to use him, he was technically good to use under water as you could use his cane to hit enemies, but I never really felt the need for that ability when Dixie made swimming easier. Diddy really had no proper use, he glides for a short period of time, which is only good for fast paced levels. Nintendo basically Made Dixie Kong so good, that there was rarely ever a time that you would want to switch to Cranky or Diddy, sure, there were some levels that Diddy would have made the level easier as his gliding allows you to move faster when airborne, Dixie moving slower airborne was easy to work around once you get use to using her, being able to reach higher places was more useless compared to Diddy Kongs Jet pack. The Nintendo Switch version is adding Funky Kong, who looks to overshadow all 3 characters, which will only make matters worse for character use.
Does anyone else miss all the Animal Buddies from previous Donkey Kong games? Rami the Rhinoceros was the only companion to make it into tropical freeze, I would assume we do not see animal buddies anymore because it would make the game too easy with the current level designs. Nintendo could have at least brought Squitter the Spider back, Squitter was able to shoot webs at enemies to take them out, Squitter could also shoot webs that would make platforms, which you could jump on, we could have had some pretty cool levels with squitter. Nintendo could have added an extra bonus level for each world, like the K level, but this level would bring back each animal buddy, where you would have to use them through the whole level start to finish, one animal buddie per section of the game, I personally would really like to see animal buddies make a return in some form.
Donkey Kong tropical freeze bosses were some of the longest fights in all the Donkey Kong games, they each had multiple stages, much longer then all the other games, I found them to be relatively easy, some stages were harder than others, but what really puzzled me, is how misplaced some of the bosses felt. I personally felt like the world 2 boss Skowl the startling (big Viking owl), was much more difficult than the world 5 boss Bashmaster the unbreakable (polar bear), the owls moves were more difficult to dodge, you had to think ahead of each dodge, otherwise you might get trapped and have to take damage, plus a lot of his moves left only one safe place to go with very little time to get there, where the polar bear, difficult yes, was much easier to dodge as long as you were able to jump up onto the ice blocks that he hit towards you, they were both fun boss fights, I just felt like the polar bear should have been more difficult, seeing as he was the second last boss of the game. Then you have the world 4 boss Fugu the frightening(Pufferfish), what an annoying boss fight, swimming around in water, trying to hit his attacks back at him or hit him while he is deflated, while dealing with being sucked towards him and then blown away from him, while trying to avoid all the spikes on the walls, then it gets worse, he expands so large that you have a very small amount of space to sneak by him before he crushes you into the wall, He was must more challenging then the world 5 boss. The final boss Lord Fredrik the Snomad King was the biggest pain ever, he was not necessarily hard, I just found it hard to get the right timing to hit him, if you missed your chance, you would have to go through the whole cycle all over again, Nintendo made it easy enough to heal during the fight, so you could basically just keep going and going until you finally hit him, he would definitely be a challenge if you faced him with 1 heart, I didn’t hate any of the bosses, they just felt misplaced difficulty wise.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is a classic addition to the Donkey Kong Series, it may have taken some heat from feeling like a repeat of older games, however, Donkey Kong is a 2d Platformer, it involves shooting from barrels, narrow jumps, the need for good timing to avoid obstacles, riding a rhino and destroying all in your path, swinging on vines, finding all 4 Kong Letters, puzzle pieces and bonus stages in each level. All you need is new levels and a theme, Donkey Kong is what it is and there is no need to change it. I will admit, I miss seeing some of the older enemies, the noises they make when you take them out, the level designs, music, how intimidating the wasps were and not being able to use as many animal companions as before, using all the same music and enemies would make it an entire repeat. It would have been nice if Nintendo did not play it safe and made the Donkey Kong levels a bit more complex like they use to be, regardless, I still enjoyed Tropical Freeze and can’t wait for the next.
What boss did you find hard, any levels you despised? Which animal buddy would you like to see have a return? Which character did you use the most?
